Cosmic Patrol Development…

Last summer, our intrepid graphics guru, Matt Heerdt, pitched us a game. As with Leviathans, the cover image and a few short paragraphs sold us on the concept.

In a nutshell, it’s Buck Rogers meets Flash Gordon, but in a new, original setting: rockets and ray guns away!

Now Catalyst Game Labs has published three mega-tome RPGs in the last three years (376+ pages each). While we’re very proud of that work, the idea of immediately launching into another huge, massive, number-crunching RPG wasn’t appealing to anyone. At the same time, we love RPGs and we love creating new universes…That’s part of what helped to sell the concept of Cosmic Patrol for us. Instead of the one extreme of roleplaying, this would fall to the other side, taking a cue from the wonderful stream of Indy games over the last few years: digest size and a lower price-point, very light on rules so it can be heavy of flavor and improv-style play.

Matt has been instrumental in art directing the illustrations and creating the graphic layout design, as well as fully developing the background universe and a first draft of the rules (which we’ve already tossed through a round of playtesting). I’m sliding in to work with him to create a final rules set, while organizing the writing of the rest of the book.

While Matt put this site up some time ago with some updates now and then, as I’ve done with with Leviathans, I’ll be doing weekly blogs from here on out discussing the development of the rules, the universe and more. We’ll also be updating this website in the near future, adding a gallery to show off the wonderful art we’re developing, and more.

Additionally, we’ve also got a facebook page, where I often daily tweet of various Cosmic Patrol developments as well. Feel free to connect however you wish to get more updates on this cool, new RPG setting…coming soon to a planet near you!

Till next episode…

Big fan of pulp sci-fi, Doc Savage, old radio shows, etc.
Can’t wait to see Cosmic Patrol.

Love to hear that! Can’t wait to talk about it some more and reveal what it all entails!

Hm. I’ve just now found out about this game through Beasts of War. It’s no Leviathans ( XD ), but I’ll probably pick it up. Whether or not I’ll be able to convince any of my friends to play is another story.

Uh, I think I’ve already played this “indy” game:

This sounds a lot like John Harper’s Danger Patrol.

Danger Patrol looks like a pretty sweet game, I wish I’d have heard of it earlier. Did it ever get past the 2010 beta?

Yep, Danger Patrol is still in development (the Gamma draft will be released this summer). I’m all for more games in the retro-pulp style, but it is kind of unfortunate that you chose such a similar title. 🙁 We are playing with the same toys, so it’s not too surprising, though.

Anyway, best of luck with your game.

Thanks, you too! Of course, the name is a nod to both EE Smith’s “Galactic Patrol” and the “Space Patrol”/”Planet Patrol” radio and tv shows from the ’50s and ’60s.

As a collector of pulp SF novels and RPG books… I think it’s a safe bet I will be snatching up both the Cosmic patrol and Danger patrol books. Good luck.
